Quick answer
Hytale dedicated servers use UDP port 5520 (QUIC). TCP forwarding isn't required and won't work. The most common causes of failed joins: the port was forwarded as TCP, the firewall blocks UDP, the server isn't authenticated (the console says No server tokens configured), the game and server are on different protocol versions after an update, the port was left off the address (Hytale doesn't support SRV records), or the network uses CGNAT or symmetric NAT.
Ports
5520UDP (QUIC): Game. Change it with--bind3478UDP outbound: Friend-world connection coordination
How to fix it, step by step
- Authenticate the server. Run
/auth login devicein the server console and approve the code at accounts.hytale.com/device. Until you do, the console showsNo server tokens configuredand players can't join. - Match versions and patchlines. The client and server must be on the exact same protocol version, so update the server as soon as Hytale updates. Pre-release and release patchlines can't join each other.
- Forward UDP 5520. Forward UDP 5520 to the server PC's reserved local IP and allow it through the firewall, for example in PowerShell:
New-NetFirewallRule -DisplayName "Hytale" -Direction Inbound -Protocol UDP -LocalPort 5520 -Action Allow. - Don't bind to localhost. The default bind is
0.0.0.0:5520. Binding to127.0.0.1only accepts connections from the same machine. - Share the full host:port. Friends paste the whole
host:portinto Direct Connect. SRV records aren't supported, so a bare domain without the port won't work. - Test from outside and check NAT. Test from mobile data. If the forward is correct and it still fails, you may be behind CGNAT or symmetric NAT; Hypixel suggests a VPS or dedicated server, and recommends Tailscale as a fallback. See the CGNAT guide.
Friend worlds (no dedicated server)
Friend worlds use a Hytale relay when no direct path exists, so friends can usually join even through CGNAT. You need to be Hytale friends, the share code must be current, and outbound UDP 3478 must be allowed. The Copy Network Report button in Online Play gives a diagnosis that's safe to share. Share codes contain your IP addresses, so never post them publicly.
After a big update (Chapter I)
Chapter I (released Oct 12, 2026) changed the protocol version and upgrades worlds on first load, and older servers can't open upgraded worlds. Back up first. Many older plugins break at startup; test without them. The server needs Java 25 and at least 4 GB of RAM. Exit code 11 on a self-hosted server means the server data is inside the launcher's install folder; move it.
Test it from the outside
Your own Wi-Fi can't tell you whether friends can reach the server. The free Server Doctor check contacts your server once from the internet, the way the game does, and tells you the most likely cause. The same check runs in Discord with /fix.
No PC to host 24/7?
Symmetric NAT and CGNAT can make a home Hytale server unreachable no matter what you forward, and Hypixel itself suggests a VPS or dedicated server in that case. Hytale's "Launch Verified" hosts are listed on its support site.
